Florence's Not-So-Secret Secrets

I rarely post on the blog twice in one day. Heck, I hardly post on the blog ever. Certainly I never post at 4 am (don't get confused- that's 10pm for those of you in VA, 9 if you are reading this from the South) on a Saturday night. This, however, simply could not wait; the world NEEDS to know about the so called "secret" goodness that is wafting down the early morning streets of Firenze. Try a quick Google search of "secret bakery Florence" and see what you will find; just walk through the neighborhoods of the city and you will discover even more. Every early early morning, the bakeries of the city are up and bustling, preparing their goods for the next day. Supposedly, if you know just where to go, just how to knock, and just who to ask, you too can get in on this late night pastry extravaganza for a single euro.

Tonight (ehh this morning?), I ventured out with our friends Kait, Kassi, and Courtney to see if everything we had heard was true. We weren't disappointed; a 30 minute wait outside a very sketchy unmarked back door yielded cornetta con nutella. Because this enterprise may or may not be illegal, customers must knock on a hard-to-find door and wait to see if the bakers will appear. When/if they do, you quickly ask (in Italian!) for what you want before the door again closes in your face. After another wait, the baker will return with your stash, swiftly trade you for your euros, and hurry you away with a loud hush. And voila, you have successfully completed a black market deal.

After our chocolate croissants, however, we found our bakery exploration was not done for the night. Walking back towards our apartments, we were hit smack in the face. The most delicious scent was mocking us, so we sniffed it out, leading us to another bakery even more yummy than the first (and a great deal less sketchy if you ask me.) A tip from the friendly locals who helped us figure out the place took us to our third bakery of the morning. Don't worry, though, we capped ourselves off after pastry number two...for now.
